Pilot Project

The ePortfolio California project includes specific goals and objectives that could lead to beneficial change or added-value for California students and educators. The pilot officially commenced in the fall of 2008.

Phase I: Fall 2008 – June 2010

The first phase of the project was to recruit a small set of inter-segmental educational institutions to implement electronic portfolios into one or more courses for one year.  Click here to see a list of the participating pilot campuses. Multiple electronic portfolio applications were tested and subscription licenses were offered at negotiated prices for the duration of the pilot. Face to face trainings and online webinars were conducted, and online resources were assembled, to facilitate ongoing implementation support.

Lessons learned in Phase I:

  • Use quality rubrics in evaluating ePortfolio applications.

  • Managing this particular technology involves a variety of approaches designed for the diverse stakeholders.

  • Online resources will support adoption, sharing, and the facilitation of a community of practice.

  • Facilitating licensing, for our pilot project and beyond, adds time and expense that could otherwise be put towards supporting the project.

Phase II: January 2010 – June 30, 2010

Phase II of the project includes evaluating what we’ve learned so far in the first phase of the pilot and commencing research with Stanford University.   Our goal is to understand the “value-added” role that the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office can play in bringing this emerging technology to Californians.

Goals for Phase II:

  • Identify important feasibility issues that address portability and how ePortfolio California can influence standards for development and support of desirable features. Play a leadership role in this industry, actively participate in the international effort to develop software design standards, and continue to scan the market for emerging ePortfolio applications.

  • Playing a leadership role in the advancement of ePortfolios, and the effective practices that improve teaching and learning through the use of this tool.

  • Work with Stanford University to develop an evaluation/research component, adding to an educational research base to promote and share research with the broader community.

  • Evaluation of the “value-added” roles and services that the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office can offer.

Phase III and Beyond

Beginning summer 2010, ePortfolio California will roll out a stable, sustainable set of core services that will help facilitate the movement and success of electronic portfolios in California. Our vibrant community of practice shall serve as an example of collaboration at its best: educators sharing best practices, dialogue, and resources that aim to help or improve teaching and learning for our students education and future careers.
