PESC Academic ePortfolio Workgroup Fall 2011 Meeting Notes

PESCFall2011_sm.jpgSeeking individuals with schema development and XML experience who would be willing to review work and provide feedback towards future tasks and development.

The Post-secondary Electronics Standards Council held their Fall 2011 Data Summit on October 12 - 14, 2011 in San Francisco, CA. Notes from the discussion on use cases and user stories have been posted on the PESC Academic ePortfolio Workgroup Wiki site.

In a status report to the Data Summit attendees, the following information and goals were conveyed:

  • Continuing the work of searching for and relating existing standards from PESC and other organizations to the needs, users, and life stages in our scope document (available on the Wiki.) This identifies where schemas already exist and where new work will need to be done to address the gaps.
  • Realizing that the scope of this work covers PK20W (from elementary or middle school through career transitions in the workforce) it will be necessary to work in phases. First identify the low-hanging fruit that addresses the needs and goals of the traditional student. In a later phase look at the broader lifelong-portfolio needs and workforce development needs and goals.

  • The target will be to make a first submission to the PESC Change Control Board for the next PESC Data Summit in Las Vegas in early May of 2012. With that in mind, below is a schedule of workgroup calls between now and the next Data Summit. There was also a suggestion to schedule a face-to-face working session before the next Data Summit to help achieve this goal, likely sometime in late February or early March, 2012.

  • Special thanks to Joseph Giroux from the California Community Colleges for his work on the schema research. The Workgroup is trying to identify folks who may be able to help Joseph with this task and future steps. People with schema development and XML experience who would be able to review work and provide feedback would be invaluable to future tasks.

  • A bi-weekly call schedule, with exceptions for holidays, is outlined below. All calls will take place on Thursdays at 1 pm ET, 12 noon CT, 11 am MT, and 10 am PT. Please add these to your calendar. Reminders will be forwarded through a listserv the week of the call. Call-in information will be forwarded with the reminders.
